The Hidden Power of Writing: A Skill Worth Keeping

Is it too old-fashioned? Antiquated? Archaic? My last newsletter promised a deeper dive, and “for another day”, into how hand writing compares to typing. Today is the day we give proper recognition to the fading practice of writing by hand.

Let me cover some things you probably forgot about, never really thought about, didn’t think you cared about, when it comes to picking up the pen. These things are worth pondering, and maybe you’ll find one or two reasons to bring this skill BACK into your life again. Here’s why writing can be so beneficial:

1. Enhances Memory and Focus. Writing by hand engages the brain more deeply, using different neural pathways for cognitive increase in children, and slowed cognitive decline in adults. The better retention of information helps with learning and remembering things–why notetaking and re-writing notes has always been a good study practice. Increased comprehension and creativity come from writing rather than typing. The non-linear thinking can lead to unexpected ideas that would normally be missed with mere typing.

2. More Presence. The slower pace of writing by hand demands presence. Leading to more mindfulness, careful thought, clearer ideas, solutions and resolution formation. It has been linked to improvement in emotional regulation and reducing stress by being meditative and free flowing by nature. Who doesn’t want that?

Keep in mind, writing by hand requires no power, no software, nor any devices–which are full of distractions from thought. No! It’s only you, the pen, and the paper–or perhaps your finger in the sand… or whatever! Think about that for a minute!

3. It’s Personal. The written word is wayyyyy more personal and expressive. There are so many different ways we write, whether we’re jotting down notes, scribbling a quick list, thoughtfully journaling, or composing an intimate love letter. Our individuality and personality are expressed in the written word. Creating a more emotionally engaging experience, with tactile pleasure too! Something that simply cannot be duplicated when typed. PS: It’s PRIVATE!

Ok, ok, ok… Yes! Typing can be faster! And certain documents and situations require the ease of digital editing, organization and collaboration. Typing is very useful for that! I understand!

Still, I love the practicality and simplicity of always having paper and pen on hand. For when I need or want to go deeper with thoughts, ideas and learning. I guess there is a time and a place for everything. I just hope that the habit and skill of writing by hand continues to be appreciated for its unique benefits that add to our lives. God willing, I plan to never give it up!
