Did you watch the Masters Tournament last weekend? Congrats to Rory! Did you know that the iconic entry to Augusta National Golf Club is called Magnolia Lane? This majestic drive is flanked with over 60 mature southern magnolia trees, towering over and creating a tunnel-like approach. It is quite spectacular! Not till the other day did I remember how eye-catching magnolias are! One after another, they were grabbing my attention. I was drawn to their beauty. I couldn’t look away! Every single one seemed to earn my awareness, consideration, adoration, obsession. And not just the gloriously massive ones, but the humbly meager ones too! All of them! Nothing short of showstopping!
I grew up with a tremendous magnolia tree on the property and recall the brevity of their blossoms. Velvety buds bursting at the seams, revealing slivers of what was to come. Star-like, cup shaped pink and white blooms, some bigger than a grown man’s hand. Seemingly sturdy, only to fall at the first gust of wind, leaving a beautiful mess of waxy petals, scattered and slick underfoot. I will admit to under-appreciation for the magnolia back then. More captivated by the promise of the neighboring cherry tree’s bloom. Maybe the magnolia was too elegant and sophisticated for my young, playful, whimsical spirit.
FUN FACT: The magnolia is said to be 95 million years old. Incredible! Prehistorically evolving even before bees. Their tough flowers were built to be pollinated by beetles. WOW!
Every moment of every day is bringing something new. If you haven’t had the chance to get out and admire some of spring’s glory, do it now! All the shoots, sprouts, buds and blossoms—the constant revival unfolding—does not disappoint! I am taking it all in! Yet nothing quite compares to the magnolias so far, filling me with wonder and awe. For me, they are a reminder of how grateful I am God created such beautiful things, and all things. This gift of appreciation is something I have to have.
