Things I Have to Have: Vitamin D

Did you know that we could be outside, naked, all winter in NY and not get the vitamin D we need? The angle of the sun is too low. Only south of latitude 35-37° N does the sun provide enough UVB year-round for synthesizing Vitamin D. That puts us down in the Carolinas!… Hmmmm…

At this very moment, I’ll bet most of us “winter warriors” are deficient in our Vitamin D. For those of us who don’t live a few degrees south of the Mason Dixon line, we need to pay attention and find other ways to get enough D during these colder months. Here’s why Vitamin D is so important:

-Immune Function Booster: Wards off infections like flu, RSV, and Covid.
-Elevates Mood and Cognitive Function: Reduces depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Regulates mood, supports brain function as you age. (So does writing by hand 😊)
-Bone Health: Crucial for calcium absorption for stronger bones and teeth.
-Muscle Function: Supports strength and coordination. Less falling.
-Cardiovascular Health: May help to regulate blood pressure, lowers inflammation!!!
-Metabolic Health: Supports weight management.

Where do we get Vitamin D?
  -Responsible sun exposure
  -D3 Supplements
-Foods like fatty fish, dairy, cheese, mushrooms, peas, egg yolks

Personally, I take about 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 on winter days. But that’s just me, based on my research, and my D levels being spot on. In my opinion, optimal levels of D is crucial to health and wellbeing, making Vitamin D something I have to have.
