| Why do we insist on torturing ourselves by trying to remember everything in our heads? Why do we resist cultivating one of the BEST habits there is—unloading practically every thought out of our minds, every chance we get? Getting things out of us and onto paper, a screen, a voice file, an email or text? Why not offload thoughts into a journal or log all tasks and happenings into our calendars? Let’s keep this simple, and start with the most basic, most effective ways to keep track of everything that matters. This ONE habit can lift a surprising amount of mental weight, giving us more clarity, less anxiety, sharper focus, boosted creativity and better sleep! Who doesn’t want that? Notes, notes, notes! We need places—yes, multiple places, but not too many places—where we can capture every kind of thought that matters. Places we trust. Places we can go back to, knowing it’s all there. Appointments, tasks, ideas, questions. Revelations, projects, repairs. Books to read, songs to hear, movies to watch. Recipes, websites, apps, podcasts, restaurants, trips. Memorable quotes and guiding scripture. ANYTHING that crosses our mind—if it’s worth remembering, deserves a second look, or needs more thought—it belongs somewhere. Where do YOU put these things? Do you have a system in place? Do you need a better one? With summer upon us, NOW is a perfect time to start fresh, with simple, practical ways to keep track of it all. There are a gazillion tools out there. Personally, I prefer the most basic solutions, that are often the best. What’s the one thing we always have with us? Our phones. As long as they’re charged, we have a place to capture a thought or two, or two hundred! I keep it simple and use the Notes app, creating separate notes for different people, topics, lists and anything I want to track. Another go-to app I use is Google Keep. It’s where I manage to-do lists, track progress and stash a growing stockpile of ideas. If you haven’t tried this app, take 10 minutes one morning to watch a quick YouTube tutorial. You’ll be ready to dive right in! It’s simple, intuitive, and incredibly satisfying for those of us who love checking things off. Check… check…check! [Click here to read an earlier article: Things I Have to Have: Google Keep.] Another simple, creative way to clear my mind—I just email or text myself. I’m already beholden to my inbox and constantly messaging others—why not add myself to the conversation? Jotting down a thought, a reminder, a bit of info, and sending it to myself. A quick mental purge that keeps things from slipping through the cracks. Where they’re not lost, easy to find, till I can get to them, and give them the proper attention they deserve. I’m not the biggest fan of Siri, but Voice Memos might be a surprisingly handy option too. I must try it someday soon. See if I like it! And last—but certainly not least—there’s the good old-fashioned pen! Pen to paper, journals, daily planners, calendars, notepads, Post-it notes, scraps of paper, napkins, matchbooks, bubblegum wrappers, anything we can write on to capture what matters. Why is it so important to unload, offload, download, release, cleanse, and clear out our thoughts? Mental Benefits: Getting everything out of our heads clears the mental clutter that quietly steals from our focus. It can ease anxiety instantly and boost self-awareness—helping us recognize patterns, spot triggers, and uncover what truly energizes, motivates and inspires us. Productivity: Want to hang onto that revelation, inspiring thought, great idea? Jotting it down in the moment, in the middle of the night, whenever the thought strikes, can save us a lot of frustration later. Capturing ideas as they come allows us to revisit them with fresh eyes and decide if there’s anything worth pursuing. We don’t have to remember everything—ironically, the act of writing it down actually helps us remember better! Giving us a clearer picture of how to prioritize what’s most important. The result? More order, more freedom and an unburdened mind— open to creative ideas instead of occupied with noise and unimportant distractions everywhere. Seeing things on paper or screen helps us discern the actionable items needed for progress! Physical and Emotional: Ever struggle with insomnia? Even occasionally? Don’t just accept it. Try a simple brain dump before bed—stream-of-consciousness writing to unload the day’s thoughts can quiet a racing mind, ease emotional weight, and lead to better sleep. It might be surprising to learn exactly what’s been keeping you up. Summer is here! Life speeds up with longer days, busy schedules, and the challenge of balancing work and play. The more we try to juggle, the more important it becomes to clear the mental clutter. Simple ways to capture the things we need to do, remember, follow up on—anytime, anywhere, everywhere—could make all the difference. Let’s not let distractions and disorganization steal our focus. Staying present leads to a more fulfilling, enjoyable summer, and life. There’s a lot to do! Let’s not miss it! If you need my help creating a better system, let me know!
