LinkedIn Profile Updates Worth Doing (Now)!

One of the first things I help my clients with is their LinkedIn profile.

LinkedIn can be THE most important online presence for professionals. While Instagram and Facebook followers are looking mostly to be entertained and zone OUT, the LinkedIn audience is looking to ZONE IN!

A place for professionals’ content, including everything from business networking, to thoughtful solutions, to leadership mindset, to personal and professional development. Even though it says that only 4% of professionals post content to LinkedIn, there is A LOT there!

Did you know that LinkedIn is the ONLY social media platform that is also a search engine? Think about that for a minute! Does that make you want to have a fresh, all-star LinkedIn profile? If so, let’s start here!

These are some simple and quick things you can do right now to spruce up your LinkedIn profile:

1. Make your Headline more descriptive of WHAT you do. Typically we list only our Title in the Headline, but take the opportunity (and the high number of allowable characters) to actually describe some of what you DO. For example, I am a Virtual Assistant, my Headline says “Virtual Assistant for Service Based Solo Professionals | KIMCOAST.com”. This obviously explains more about what I do and hopefully eliminates some unnecessary confusion right off the bat.

2. Update your Contact Info. Don’t miss this opportunity to have your current email address and your current website for your current business. Depending on your business and your preference, you decide whether you want to show your phone number or not. Bottom line, you want to make it as easy as possible for people to contact you.

3. Update the About Section. This one might take a little longer but you can always update it with changes over time. Here you will want to talk about what you do, and who you help. It might be best to describe yourself in the 3rd person so that you can be more comfortable talking about yourself (without feeling braggy). You can use phrases like “Areas of specialization include…” and “Results her clients get are…” and “The services she offers include…”.

At the end of this section, it’s a good idea for a call to action like “To learn more about how Kim can help you…” or “To schedule a call with Kim, click here…”.

4. Edit your Public Profile & URL. In the top right of your profile page, click on “Edit your Public Profile & URL”. This is a quick little change you can make so your LinkedIn URL is not a series of numbers that don’t make sense to you. (When I see this is not updated, it’s an indicator to me the person might not be optimizing the power of their LinkedIn fully.) Edit it to include your name only (if it’s available, or with a dash or some variation), rather than your company name, which could change over time. Be sure to update this wherever you refer to your LinkedIn URL, now that it has changed and makes better sense! So simple!

These are just a few things to get you started having a great LinkedIn page and presence. Take the time to make these tweaks and represent yourself in the best possible light! Connect with me if you need help! I’m here!
