Things I Have to Have: My Red Powder Room

“Seeing RED” is not a bad thing in my world.

Red is BOLD! Red is FIRE! Red is LIFE! Red is luck, energy, motivation, passion and LOVE. A great RED will always strike me the best way. It’s patriotic. It’s sporty. It’s fun! If you know me, you know that I am not afraid of color, and RED is a color that is essential in my world.

The obvious choice for my “red room” (stay with me here, not go all 50 shades of grey) was the powder room. I immediately loved this idea because it’s a room that everyone needs to visit! While I try to keep it very clean and uncluttered, this space encapsulates many of my favorite things, making it a place I have to have.

Most of these favorite things include; an adored painting by my late friend (Maxine Jurow), an etching of Lake Warren in NH (by sister #1), a Perry Como platinum record of “It’s Impossible” (our wedding song), a monogrammed needlepoint pillow (by sister #2), the perfect little chair restored by my Mom, my Dad’s favorite childhood book, honorary Beach Club burgees, Block Island rocks (of course), our wedding invitation, and various small prints of Sebasco Lighthouse in Maine, the Beach Club, Block Island, and Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor. Believe it or not, there’s even more in there!

Everything in and about this room delights me with its meaning. The best part is that there was no agenda to making it all work together. It just happened! I think that’s what I LOVE about it the most! It was organically coordinated. A signal that when things are right, they fall into place. We can trust that they are meant to be. It’s also a beautiful reminder to surround ourselves with what we love the most.

So “seeing RED” can be a GREAT thing! I mean, it is for me!
