Things I Have to Have: The “Little Things”

I’ve been finding myself appreciating more of the “little things” these days. A great mindset to have—but some days, it’s easy to overlook the small stuff. We get busy chasing the big moments: milestones, breakthroughs, answered prayers wrapped in giant neon signs.

But guess what? Most of life’s grace hides in plain sight—in the everyday exchanges that remind us we’re connected, cared for, and quietly blessed. The way a friend remembers your coffee order, the sound of your son laughing from another room, the compliment that conveys, “I see you”, the phone call or text that simply says, “I’m thinking of you.”

I’ve come to believe that holiness and wholeness aren’t distant, dramatic, or even very different. They’re woven through us—if we choose to know them, and to know ourselves. God isn’t “out there” waiting to be found; He’s right here, within us, showing up through kindness, patience, humor, and the people who make our lives feel safe and seen.

When you notice these moments—the shared laughter with old friends, the smile from a stranger, the quality time spent with someone you love, the quiet comfort of someone just being there, the hugs!—you’re really noticing God in motion: the divine, disguised as the ordinary.

So, pause. Smile. Say thank you.

The sacred isn’t reserved for Sunday mornings, mountaintops, or miracles. It’s alive in the little things that happen every day. There is so much to appreciate—and to love—in these moments of awareness, making the “little things” something I have to have.
